If your email is sluggish when you first connect to your account, or when you send and receive, you may have too much email stored in your mailbox. This is definitely the problem if you receive a Disk Quota Exceeded error.
Reduce Inbox Load Time
- You may have set a quota on your email address when you created it. If you've reached that quota, simply modify the email account on the server to have a higher quota. See the Server Setup section near the top of the article for a link to your server setup guide.
- If you use a POP account with your favorite email client, it's possible that all of your old messages are still stored on the server, even if you have been deleting them locally. Check for a feature in your POP email client that allows you to automatically delete messages from the server after a certain period of time - this is usually an advanced setting. Or, manually log into your webmail once a month to delete or archive old messages.
- If you use an IMAP account, check for unneeded messages stored in your spam folder, trash folder, and sent folder. This can be an easy way to lighten the load on your account.
- For IMAP accounts, consider creating an archive folder on the server that you do NOT subscribe to in your local email client. That way you can move older messages out of your inbox and into the archive folder, so that all those hundreds of messages don't need to be loaded every time you check your email. It will be slow only when you have to hunt through your archive folder.
- If you just have too much email stored on the server, consider creating a local folder in your email client and moving older messages there. They'll be stored on your computer instead of on the server.
- If you are having a very hard time loading your inbox, you may want to try using a POP account to access the email. It will download the messages to your computer and start relieving some of the pressure on the mailbox.
- If your email account is so full that it is completely inaccessible, one option is to delete the account on the server and then recreate it. Note that all messages stored in the account will be lost if you do this. OUr team may be able to provide you with an alternate way to access your account if you open a support request, but this is not guaranteed.
